Hello Friends!  So a question that comes up quite a bit when I book a session with a client, is "what should I/we wear?"  To be honest I like it when the client asks me that question, or even tells me what they will be wearing.  Why?  Because what you choose to wear during your session has a huge impact on what the session feel will be!  Simply put a woman in front of an old warehouse with a modern jacket, sunnies and hair in a bun will take on a completely different feel than the same woman with hair down in a boho dress with flowers in her hair.  Completely different.  Below is a list of suggestions ( Not at all exhaustive however some things that I've learned over the years)

Women

First off I want to mention that what you choose to wear is obviously an expression of your style!  If you are a girl who doesn't like to wear dresses by all means rock the skinny jeans!

1. Consider your insecurities!  What I mean by this is if you are insecure with your arms for instance this isn't probably the time to wear a strapless dress.  Instead accentuate the part of your body that you like!

2. Think coordination not matching!  The above photo is an awesome example!  She wore nice jeans and a flowey white shirt, her accessories brought it all together.  Yet it isn't all matchey matchey with a peachy shirt to go with it.

3.  when it comes to a photo session consider dressing up a tad bit more than every day, it really does bring the style of the shoot together.  So your personal style brought up a notch (aka no tennis shoes, old jeans....) 

4.  This isn't a diehard rule, instead something to consider.  Instead of jeans wear a casual dress,  this can sometime be more flattering.  The photo below is a good example of this, the session and dress are casual yet by her wearing a dress instead of jeans, it allows her to stand out a bit more and doesn't make her look like she's trying to match her husband.  ( it also allows the couple to wear similar colors without looking like they planned it)

5. NO shorts!  Just don't.  The only time I would say go for it, is if they are a bit longer.  But as a rule I wouldn't suggest it.

The tips I gave the ladies above really could be applied to men as well, so read those too! 

1.  Empty out your pockets!  I completely understand that it's normal to have your phone or wallet in your pocket, but I will probably ask you to take it out anyway, no one want's a weird lump in their pocket for their engagement, family or senior photos!

2. No baseball caps please!  As cool and effortless as it looks ( hey I like baseball caps!)  It ends up darkening your face and eyes and just plain doesn't look good.

3.  Consider up'ing the style, like the ladies dress a tad bit more formal.  So for a casual shoot, like the above, instead of a t-shirt do a button down. 

4.  No matchy matchy!  I realize unless you are doing a senior session, you most likely will be with other people in the photo shoot.  Please don't all match ( think black sweaters!)  Instead coordinate.

Kids!

Alright Mamas! This section has to be the easiest!  They look cute in anything! The suggestions above go for kiddos too.  Dress up a tad bit more than every day, it doesn't need to be an 'itchy' dress but something that will add to the cute lil lady or lil man.  Once again coordinate but please no matching.  One extra little side not for this section, I absolutely love it when I see a kiddo bring their special stuffed animal or toy!  It helps them enjoy the session and also captures for the future that cute stage!  For babies it also is awesome because it grabs their attention if the toy is behind me!  One last Note

This is a somewhat random side note, but considering it's the dead of winter here it's on my mind!  When you are booking a session for the winter, (in an area that isn't warm and green that is!)  consider wearing some pop of color, this will bring the photos to life just a bit more and allow you to stand out from the surroundings.
